1. Tokyo Daiichi Hotel Tsuruoka

We recommend our visitors to stay one night in Tsuruoka city if they want to accomplish the pilgrimage to Mt. Yudono after Mt. Haguro & Mt. Gassan (the two other mountains of the Dewa Sanzan) so they can leave early in the morning with the bus bound for Ochiai (departs at 9am from S-MALL Bus Terminal, timetable here) and arrive safely at Nanakamado before sunset after the visit of Honmyoji Temple, Churenji Temple and Dainichibo Temple.

The closest hotel to a bus stop is Tokyo Daiichi Hotel Tsuruoka, which is annexed to the S-MALL bus terminal.

You can of course choose to stay in other hotels, onsen or ryokan in Tsuruoka city.

Yasuno Ryokan can also dispatch upon prior reservation a free shuttle greeting service from/to Asahi Chosha bus stop or from/to Honmyoji Temple's trailhead.

Similarly, they can also pack a bento lunch box for you the next day to bring on the way, but this requires prior reservation.

3. Nanakamado (Tamugimata)

Category: Minshuku (traditional family-inn)

Nanakamado is a minshuku (family-run lodge) and restaurant located between Dainichibo Temple and Tamugimata Village (near Tasominka, Arikoshizawa Trailhead, and Nanatsu Falls). It is closed on Tuesdays, but on open days you can enjoy its famous buckwheat noodles (soba) made with the pristine water of Mt. Gassan, served with a tempura set.

While Nanakamado doesn’t currently offer English menus, photos are available to help you choose your meal!

If you stay at Nanakamado, you can ask the owners to prepare an onigiri bento lunch box in advance (at least 3 days before visit), perfect for taking with you the next day.

5. Shizu Onsen

Category:  ryokan (& onsen)

Shizu Onsen will be your comforting note at the end of your pilgrimage, with its high-end ryokan Tsutaya, which we highly recommend.

The owners of Tsutaya have an intimate knowledge of Mt. Yudono and Mt. Gassan, and have long welcomed pilgrims traveling the Dewa Sanzan routes.

Shizu Onsen can be reached by bus from Nishikawa town with the Gassan Shizu line (bus stop name: Shizu)

Located on trail : Yes
Payment: Cash & credit card & online payments
Average price for the night:

6. Nishikawa Town's hotels

Category: hotels & ryokan

Nishikawa makes for a superb place to spend the night, even though it is located a little off the main trail.

The town can be reached by bus on the Gassan–Shizu Onsen Line, either from Shizu Bus Stop or Hondoji Shamusho bus stop, depending on where your hike concludes.

We particularly recommend Ryokan Dewaya, celebrated for its exquisite sansai (mountain vegetable) cuisine. A stay here beautifully illustrates why Nishikawa Town was recognized as one of UN Tourism’s Best Tourism Villages in 2024.

Located on trail : Yes
Payment: Cash & credit card & online payments
Average price for the night:
 12000 yen
Average price for lunch: 2000- 3000 yen

CAUTION

There is no escape route from Mt. Yudono to Shizu Onsen, and no shops or restaurants for over 10 km. For this reason, we do not recommend this portion of the trail for beginners.

Please make sure to pack enough food, water, and snacks before continuing.

Our partner travel agencies can help you arrange a full pilgrimage with meals and accommodations included as a self-guided tour.
