WHO
WE ARE
We are a community of people from Tsuruoka and Nishikawa who share a deep passion for the Rokujurigoe Kaido—its history, its landscapes, and its spirit.
Our mission is to ensure that this cultural and natural heritage continues to thrive for generations to come, even as we face the challenges of an aging and shrinking population.
ABOUT ARGODIA.
What is “Argodia”?
The Argodia Research Association was founded in 2002 by local volunteers from the former Asahi Village (Tsuruoka City) with the aim of preserving and passing down the Rokujurigoe Kaido, a 40-kilometer route that for over 1,200 years has served both as a sacred pilgrimage road to Mt. Yudono and as an important trade link between Shōnai and inland Yamagata. Each year, members cut back vegetation, maintain the path, and install signposts along the trail.
The name Argodia is a coined word that combines Arcadia—the idea of an idyllic land—with "Arugode!", a Shonai dialect expression meaning “let’s walk together.” Since 2002, the Argodia group has been dedicated to preserving the Rokujurigoe Kaido and making use of its cultural and natural resources.
Argodia has been awarded the 2024 Ministry of the Environment Commendation for Contributions to Nature Trails. This commendation is presented by the Ministry of the Environment to individuals and organizations across Japan who are committed to the proper upkeep and management of mountain paths and nature trails. The award was handed to Chairman Koseki by Conservation Officer Mototsugu Watanabe of the Bandai-Asahi National Park Haguro Nature Conservation Office during the “Rokujūrigoe Kaidō Promotion Forum,” held at the Asahi Chūō Community Center in Tsuruoka City.
Chairman Koseki commented: “I am truly grateful that the steady efforts of each of our members have been recognized. While the aging of our membership poses challenges in passing this work on to younger generations, we remain committed to preserving the Rokujurigoe Kaido, which is truly a treasured heritage of our region.”
The association also organizes trekking events for the public, where participants can walk the historic path, visit the sokushinbutsu (self-mummified monks), and enjoy scenic highlights such as Hananokizaka, one of the region’s most famous autumn foliage spots. These activities have become increasingly popular, attracting about 800 participants annually—including a growing number of international visitors.
Looking ahead, the association is determined to reaffirm the value of the Rokujūrigoe Kaidō and continue sharing its unique appeal with people across Japan and beyond.
