Juo Toge Pass

Once a site dedicated to the Ten Buddhist Kings who judge souls in the afterlife.

About the place.

Juo Toge 十王峠 means “The Peak of the Ten Kings.” In the past, this was the site of Juodo Temple, dedicated to the Ten Buddhist Kings who judge souls in the afterlife. A teahouse once stood here as well, as shown in the historical illustration below.

Today, the temple and teahouse are gone. Only a statue of Jizo Bodhisattva remains—Jizo being the compassionate guide who protects travelers and leads lost souls to safety.

During the anti-Buddhist movements that spread through the region after the Meiji Restoration in 1868, most of the statues of the Ten Kings were removed. However, two were saved:  Enma, the King of Hell, and  Datsueba, the old woman who strips the clothing from the souls of the dead.  These two figures are now preserved at Churenji Temple in the village of Oami.
