HOW TO GET THERE
To do the pilgrimage in the following order (the "Dewa Sanzan" way):
Mt. Haguro/Gassan → Mt. Yudono → Shizu Onsen → Nishikawa
A. REACH TSURUOKA CITY


1) Via Yamagata City
By bus (easiest option) - 1 hour 30 minutes
Take the highway bus bound for Tsuruoka City from Yamagata Ekimae Bus Stop No. 1.
No reservation required
By train - 3 hours
From Yamagata Station:

Take the Yamagata shinkansen and transfer at Shinjo for the Rikuu East Line

Transfer to the Uetsu Main Line at Amarume (bound for Tsuruoka/Niigata)

Get off at Tsuruoka Station
2) Via Niigata City
By train (easiest option) - 1 hour 25 minutes
Take the Limited Express Inaho (Uetsu Main Line) bound for Sakata / Akita.
Get off at Tsuruoka Station.
3) Via Akita
By train (easiest option) - 3 hours
Take the Limited Express Inaho (Uetsu Main Line) bound for Niigata.
Get off at Tsuruoka Station.
4) Via Sendai
By bus (easiest option) - 3 hours
Reservation needed
Take the expressway bus bound for Tsuruoka from Sendai Bus Stop No. 40
Get off at S-MALL Bus Terminal.
By train - 5 hours

Take the Senzan Line to Yamagata Station

5) By plane (via Tokyo)
Fly from Haneda Airport (HND) to Shonai Airport (SYO) - 1 hour
Take the shuttle bus to Tsuruoka Station - 20 min.
To do the pilgrimage in the following order:
Nishikawa → Shizu Onsen → Mt. Yudono → Mt. Gassan/Haguro
B. REACH NISHIKAWA TOWN
1) Via Yamagata City
By bus (easiest option) - 40 minutes
Take the highway bus bound for Tsuruoka City from Yamagata Ekimae Bus Stop No. 1.
Get off the bus at Nishikawa
No reservation required
2) Via Tsuruoka City
By bus (easiest option) - 1 hour
Take the expressway bus bound for Yamagata city from Tsuruoka station or S-Mall Bus Terminal
Get off at Nishikawa
No reservation required
HOW TO INCLUDE IT IN A DEWA SANZAN TRIP
Visit Mt. Haguro & Mt. Gassan, go back to Tsuruoka City, and walk the Rokujurigoe Kaido fully (the "traditional way")
