Shimekakezakura
Pilgrims once removed their sacred oshime onto this cherry tree, marking the end of their Mt. Yudono journey.
About the place.
Believed to be approximately 200 years old, this Shimekakezakura cherry tree of Oami hamlet has been designated as a Natural Monument of Tsuruoka City.
With a root circumference of 4.9 meters, a trunk girth of 3.33 meters, and a height of 15 meters, it stands among the most remarkable and imposing cherry trees in the Shonai region.
Its blossoms possess a quietly enchanting quality: opening in delicate shades of white before gradually deepening into soft pink, creating a subtle and almost ethereal transformation over the course of the blooming season. There are historical records saying that pilgrims used to remove their ritual necklace "oshime" used to do the pilgrimage to Mt. Yudono here, as a sign to mark the end of their spiritual journey. Those records are older than the cherry tree remaining currently.
