ITINERARY Day 1: The Guardians of the Trail. Visit Honmyoji, Churenji, and Dainichibo temples to pay respects to the mummified monks. Explore the sacred Itaya Springs before settling into the village of Tamugimata. Distance walked = 8km Day 2: The Heart of the Forest. Hike through the magnificent beech tree tunnels of Kohonogi. This day focuses on the deep connection between the Yamabushi and the forest, leading to spectacular viewpoints of the sacred peaks. Distance walked = 12km Day 3: Rebirth at the Sanctuary. Reach the hidden sanctuary of Mt. Yudono to conclude your transformation. Experience the stillness and the "secret" rituals that have defined this mountain for centuries. Distance walked = 2km Go back to Tsuruoka city by taxi. Total distance walked: 20.6km. Elevation gain: 1450m. Elevation loss: 500m.
